A Short Story: On Halloween Night
A SHORT STORY: ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT
The clock has run
every day at seven o’clock in the morning when Sarah gets up and goes to
the bathroom to take her daily shower. In the kitchen, her parents make the
breakfast for their daughter and their son to go to school. Therefore, Sarah
goes downstairs and she has breakfast with her family, after she walks to the
front door of her house, almost late to school. Everyone in that house has been following this routine since they moved to Holly Village City.
In this particular day, Sarah finds her best friend, Alex.
- Hey, what’s up?
- Hey, oh no. I’m feeling so strange today, I have no
idea what’s wrong with me. – Sarah says indifferently.
- It must be the pregnancy, – says her friend as they
turn the corner – your baby must be trying to communicate!
- Shut up!
Then the best friends laugh, until Sarah stops.
- Hey, did you hear that?
- Ah, no. – says the confused friend – Did you hear
what? Sarah?
- Nothing, forget it.
Alex shakes her head with disdain and she gestures to
her friend to continue the way to school. Both of them arrive at Holly Village
High School with high heels, they were
walking simultaneously looking like twins with their bodily devices and
adornments, followed by colorful fashionable clothes. Sarah and Alex waste the day at school studying the
main subjects that could be in the college entrance exam that will take them to
college. They saw problems with diseases
in science, problems of climate change,
pollution and animal extinction in geography, and about poverty, unemployment, crime and corruption
in the world in sociology. They crossed the girls hugging them like cannibal
monsters and took with them a photo that the friends had in the notebook,
because this one fell to the floor
with the wind.
- Damn it!
- Calm down, Alex!
- No! Look what the wind did.
- I saw it, but don’t be angry, because that’s not
going to change what happened…
- And the worst part of this is that happens just on
Halloween!
- Isn’t it? – Sarah gives a half-forced laugh as she
looks at her friend who scraps the papers scattered across the dirty floor.
- Yep! And this can’t be a God’s thing…
- Keep calm, nothing will happen.
Then the best friends went home.
At night, Sarah was
having dinner and she was wondering
what might have caused that wind. She no longer felt like eating, when she
looked through the window and saw the reflection of a strange being. A deformed
and disgusting face appeared in the reflection, she saw it sitting at the
dinner table while her family ate and she began to feel desperate. Then she
took an action, she decided to leave the table and went up to organize her
room, because she should fix that mess at
least once in her life.
She passed the cloth, lifted the dresser that had her
favorite book, 101 things to do before
dying, as a garnish, and swept, took the objects of the place.
The determined girl had turned on the computer, it was the same one she used to get her news, she loved to
know about celebrities’ gossip on the
internet when she didn’t read the magazines
her mother bought, and listened to Michel Bublé’s song.
Sarah was determined to clean her room, until she
reached for the sheet, and as she lowered the cloth, she saw a black cat
walking with great dexterity and care. It was
staring at her, emerald green-eyed like a panther ready to attack her, over
the top of her shelf the cat would sneak up until it sat down. At that moment
everything disappeared, only Sarah staring deeply into the eyes of the still
sitting cat looking at her. She saw her life through the flashes that came into
her mind, the cat was causing it.
Suddenly there was a shrill, shrill cry, causing Sarah’s astonishment, pulling
her out of the trance chasing the cat away.
- Daughter! We’re going to the hospital; your brother
isn’t well! You should stay and look after the house! – says Sarah’s mother
hastily hurrying out.
- But mother…
- I love you! Kisses!
Then Sarah sees no alternative, but she called Alex to
come and keep her company, for she wouldn’t be alone for a second in that
house. Ten minutes later, Alex knocked on the door, and was greeted by the best
friend who told the whole story to her.
- How insane! Girl, I think you’re not well, because
these things don’t happen.
- Alex, I’m sure of what I saw and I felt!
- I came alone on this long and dark road to keep you company!
- Why didn’t you ask hitchhiking?
- Sarah, are you sure you shouldn’t have vacation? I’ll help you book a
hotel and pack your bags!
- I don’t want anything! I just wanna know what’s
happening to me.
At this moment, Alex retreated a little and stared at
her friend. So she decided to say something.
- Look, Sarah, if I don’t go to college this year I’m
going to take a gap year, so we’re
going to have to take our time together!
- I agree! But what do you suggest me to solve this
situation?
- Let’s have a spirit séance!
- Are you crazy?
Alex then fumbles in her purse and shakes showing to
her friend an Ouija board, Sarah looks with disapproving eyes but ends up
yielding to her best friend’s request. The two girls then go to the back of
Sarah’s house and they sat on the sand of a playground, where Sarah played when
she was a kid.
- Okay, first here it says that we should pray and
then invoke the spirit that is tormenting you.
- Alex, are you sure this is safe?
- Of course, it is! – said her friend cheerfully.
First of all the best friends prayed and then,
together summoned the spirit that was bothering Sarah. Everything was silent until
the pointer began moving on the letters in the board forming a name, NEIL.
- Who? Who is Neil?
– Sarah pleaded indignantly.
The pointer rotated again and quickly on the board
forming ONE WHO WENT TO THE MOON.
- Lie! This is a lie!
- What is it, Alex? – asks the surprised friend.
- Neil Armstrong
didn’t go to the moon, that’s a lie, he’s a liar!
- I think you should be careful when you say that sort
of thing.
- Nothing’s going to happen, my friend, I don’t have hot rocks in my pocket!
- Huh? Are you crazy? – Sarah looked at her friend and
turned to the board and shouted… - Who are you?
The pointer turned several
times over the board, forming disjointed words until it all stopped and was
silent. Suddenly Alex said:
- It isn’t Neil.
- How do you know? – says Sarah.
There is a chuckle, Alex lifted her head and her eyes were
dark. There was a smile on her face. Sarah screamed. Out of nowhere just
sitting on the bed and everything seemed very clear, she looked around and
realized that it was already morning. When she picked up the cellphone, she saw
that it was November 1st, and then she laughed. It had all been a Halloween nightmare, until she looked away and
saw Alex dead by her side.
